The southern part of the area belongs to the Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture. With Duyun as the administrative center, there are more than 30 ethnic minorities including Buyi, Miao, Shui, Yi, Yao, Yi, Zhuang, Tujia, and Yi. More than half of the total population are minority people.

Local life

Shui Nationality

In the past, they believed that all natural things had spirits and that there were many gods who steered their lives. So when they met with disasters or unhappiness, they would turn to wizards and worship those powers.

Miao Nationality

They believe that everything in nature has a spirit, which incombination are mighty enough to control their lives. Every time there are disasters, they will invite a wizard to perform ceremonies designed to drive out the devil ghost. They worship their ancestors so much that memorial Ceremonies are very grand. Sacrifices such as wine, meat, and glutinous rice are costly. Some also believe in Catholicism or other Christian religions.

Dong Nationality

Their beliefs remain original, believing all things have spirits and gods – of land, water, ox, and the spirit of ancestors, etc. Every time there is natural disaster or disease, the Dong people will think devils are responsible and ask a wizard to Won them off.

Bouyei (Buyi) Nationality

There is a god for each Mountain; River, Lake or Pond; for each old and unusual tree, for megalith, caves, paddy field, and for when it rains or thunders, there are various gods. Worship ancestors’ supreme might with each family setting niches in their home, holding activities during the Spring, Pure Brightness, and the Zhongyuan Festivals.
Besides that, as many families are of the same origin, they often worship again together, sacrificing and praying for peace and happiness.

Local culture

Horsetail embroidery

Horsetail embroidery is a traditional embroidery style which uses horse hairs and silk thread as the raw materials for the handicraft. The skill of weaving horse hair into thread and sew traditional patterns has been passed down by Shui women for generations. The art was listed as one Of China’s first intangible cultural heritages in 2006.

Building of shui minority

Most of the residential areas are wet, and the woods are dense, often with wolf and tiger leopard attacked. The Stilt house of the shui can well avoid the damage of the ground and the beasts.

Miao’s 12-way block wine

The Miao family welcomes guests with a welcome drink, including welcome wine, group wine and the highest ceremonial horn wine.

Miao long table feast

The traditional cuisine of the Miao nationality is placed on the long table that is put together. The left side is the master’s seat, the right side is the guest seat, the host and the guest are relative, toasting and drinking, singing to the wine, quite distinctive.

Best travel season

June to August is the best season to visit that place. The maximum temperature of this period may reach 34°C (93.2°F). However, the weather varies greatly between day and night due to its location, and the sun is strong at Midday.

Sandu Horse Racing Festival

In 2013, the China National Minority Sports Association awarded the title of “Hometown of Chinese Horse Racing” in Sandu County. Many of the horses in the competition are raised by the local farmers themselves. They are usually used for farm work and are used when they are in competition.

Consumption level

The consumption of the Qiannan is mainly on transportation, and the food and accommodation in the village is very cheap. The ethnic minority village are not overexploited. Most of them do not need tickets. They travel in the ancient village of Qiannan, and consume about 200 yuan per day.

Bus

It is very convenient to take a bus in Duyun. Most of the bus lines pass through the railway station, bus station, and the Grand Cross. The fare is 1 yuan, and the fare is 1.5 yuan after 22:00.

Zhaitou Village

It is divided into two villages, namely Zhaitou and Shangping Village, which are known as “Thousands of Villages”. The entire village is located on a sloped area. Langmu shui village

Known as the art of paper-cutting, Langmu village is a famous paper-cutting town in Guizhou Province.

Bangao shui village

The most famous here is the horse tail embroidery, which is also known as the “First Village of Chinese horse tail Embroidery”.

Yaoshan Lapian Village

The style of the buildings in the village is peculiar. The most special one is the granary. The granary is built with main materials such as thatch, pottery and wood. It can be fireproof, anti-mouse and moisture-proof. It is a perfect multi-purpose granary.

Sinan Ancient City

It was built in the Eastern Han Dynasty and has many historical sites in the city. There are landscapes such as Tenglong Gorge Scenic Area, Siye village Scenic Area, Haojiawan Residence and Wujiang Museum. The most famous is the Sinan Confucianism Temple, located in the northern part of the county, built in the Yuan Dynasty.

Accommodation

The capital of Qiannan Prefecture is not too big, but it is still easy to find a place to stay. Ordinary hotel standard rooms are around 150 yuan, 4 star hotels in urban areas, standard rooms between 300 and 400 yuan. In the major festivals of Yao and Shui, the tourists in Duyun and surrounding villages have proliferated, and the rooms are often full. It is best to book in advance.
